Higher education represents an enormous opportunity for the application of Lean management, yet the focus thus far has been almost entirely on administrative processes. Bob Emiliani will present how Lean principles and practices apply to academic processes to improve individual courses, as well as how to use kaizen to improve entire degree programs. He will provide highlights of his own pioneering Lean experiences in higher education, including faculty and staff reaction, student feedback, and lessons learned. It will also include tips for engaging university employees in efforts to improve academic processes in response to the major changes that are happening today.

Bob Emiliani

Bob Emiliani is a professor in the School of Engineering and Technology at Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn., where he teaches courses on Lean leadership, Lean supply chain management, failure analysis of management decisions, and research methods.

Prior to joining academia in 1999, Bob worked in industry for 15 years and had management responsibility in engineering (R&D, new product development) and operations (manufacturing and supply chain). He had responsibility for implementing Lean principles and practices in both manufacturing and supply networks at Pratt & Whitney. He is the author or co-author of numerous books and papers on Lean leadership and Lean management.

Bob received engineering degrees from the University of Miami (B.S.), University of Rhode Island (M.S.), and Brown University (Ph.D.). For more information, see www.bobemiliani.com.
