Requirements for Yellow Belt Certification

Ide­al can­di­dates for the Yel­low Belt cer­ti­fi­ca­tion are indi­vid­u­als at any orga­ni­za­tion­al lev­el who are com­mit­ted to improv­ing processes.

What are the requirements?

  • Com­plete all instruc­tion mate­ri­als with­in 12 weeks

  • Apply Lean Six Sig­ma prin­ci­ples to three prac­ti­cal applications

  • Pass the YB cer­ti­fi­ca­tion exam with a score of 80% or higher

  • Pro­vide progress reports to your super­vi­sor or management.

Am I a good candidate for a Gemba Academy Yellow Belt? 

A good Yel­low Belt can­di­date has a strong inter­est in improv­ing process­es and elim­i­nat­ing waste in order to help the orga­ni­za­tion reach effi­cien­cy goals.

How long will it take to complete the Yellow Belt Certification? 

This is a 12-week course that can be com­plet­ed in less time, depend­ing on the candidate’s avail­abil­i­ty to com­plete the course­work. If the can­di­date can devote one hour per day, five days per week, the course will be fin­ished in less than four weeks. The total work­load, includ­ing mak­ing improve­ments in the work­place, is about 18 hours.

What does a Yellow Belt candidate need in order to be successful with this certification? 

Can­di­dates will need the fol­low­ing in order to be successful:

  • Time sched­uled every day to com­plete the coursework

  • Email (to cor­re­spond with coach­es as need­ed and also to receive mes­sages from Gem­ba Academy).

  • A com­put­er and broad­band inter­net to access Gem­ba Academy

  • Pow­er­Point (or sim­i­lar slide deck soft­ware) for deliv­er­ables and final report

  • A sim­ple cam­era (a typ­i­cal mobile phone is more than sufficient)

  • Process­es to improve or prob­lems to solve using the tools and meth­ods pre­sent­ed in the coursework.

Will I need to repeat these topics if I later decide to get my Gemba Academy Green Belt Certification? 

There will be no need to repeat this course­work when you upgrade to a Gem­ba Acad­e­my Green Belt. The same course mate­r­i­al will be made avail­able to you as an option­al refresh­er. Your Green Belt pro­gram will show all of your Yel­low Belt work has already been completed.

Is there a final exam? 

Yes, there is a 25-ques­tion final exam that cov­ers all of the mate­r­i­al pre­sent­ed in the pro­gram. There are also sev­er­al required quizzes and three prac­ti­cal appli­ca­tion exer­cis­es to demon­strate proficiency.
