Introduction to Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven continuous improvement methodology designed to solve problems using statistical analysis to identify and eliminate defects.
The practice was initially developed by Motorola in the 1980s in an effort to catch up with Japanese competitors (who, at the time, were producing higher-quality TVs) by bringing Japanese quality control methods to the US production line.
Like Lean, Six Sigma is a continuous improvement methodology that aims to improve products, processes, and services — and by extension, deliver more value to the end-consumer.
That said, Lean and Six Sigma apply a different mindset and approach to achieve those gains. At a basic level, Lean improves quality by going after waste and increasing velocity, while Six Sigma strives for perfection by attacking variability. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that.
In this Six Sigma introduction course, we’ll introduce Six Sigma, Lean, and how both practices work together to create a culture of continuous improvement in any work environment.
