Introduction to Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven continuous improvement methodology designed to solve problems using statistical analysis to identify and eliminate defects.

The practice was initially developed by Motorola in the 1980s in an effort to catch up with Japanese competitors (who, at the time, were producing higher-quality TVs) by bringing Japanese quality control methods to the US production line.

Like Lean, Six Sigma is a continuous improvement methodology that aims to improve products, processes, and services — and by extension, deliver more value to the end-consumer.

That said, Lean and Six Sigma apply a different mindset and approach to achieve those gains. At a basic level, Lean improves quality by going after waste and increasing velocity, while Six Sigma strives for perfection by attacking variability. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that.

In this Six Sigma introduction course, we’ll introduce Six Sigma, Lean, and how both practices work together to create a culture of continuous improvement in any work environment.

What You’ll Learn in this Online Six Sigma Introduction Course

While it might seem counterintuitive, our Six Sigma Introduction Course looks at both Six Sigma and Lean methodologies in the same foundational video series. Building a sustainable, continuous improvement practice isn’t about choosing one methodology over the other: It’s about giving your people the tools they need to solve problems, reduce waste, and bring more value to the consumer.

Benefits of this Gemba Academy Introduction to Six Sigma Course

Gemba Academy’s Introduction to Six Sigma Course is the first installment in our School of Six Sigma video training program, and is designed to provide learners with a basic understanding of both methodologies and how they can work together in a single continuous improvement practice.

We’ll also shed some light on our philosophy regarding Lean and Six Sigma. While both are powerful systems for driving organizational transformation, Lean is a better system for improving the entire business, and Six Sigma is more of a problem-solving methodology that can enhance any existing Lean practice.

Subscribers get access to our entire content library, including the School of Six Sigma, School of Lean, and Gemba Academy Live!, our virtual tour series that goes behind the scenes of real companies’ improvement journeys.
